The Importance of Data

First, a link to a relevant website;

https://degreesofbelief.roryquinn.com/parapsychology-data-science

Now with that out of the way, allow me to be frank. As far as I can tell, by and large there hasn't been much development in the PK community, both from an artistic and scientific angle. From an artistic side, the notion that psychokinesis is either tied to belief, positive emotions and the ability to visualize and the such is dubious at best. For instance, a couple of members here have noted that their abilities aren't dependent on belief, that some developed their abilities even while in a state of disbelief. If this this true, this would strongly undermine the notion that you have to believe in order to have psychokinetic powers. To me, this is somewhat absurd though then again this is not to say that belief has absolutely no effect, it's just that we ought to question whether or not it is strictly necessary for the development of PK, of which I am of the opinion that it is not. Still, based on what little data I was able to gleam, I will say that even if you don't need to believe in order to have psychokinetic powers, belief might be related to one's control over their powers (a topic which I plan on posting another time). Perhaps it is that certain emotional states are more likely to facilitate development of psychokinetic phenomenon except the problem is that hardly anyone has tried to run an experiment to test this out and if they have, most of us do not have access to that information. which brings me to my second point.

There have been quite a decent number of parapsychology centered research and, on the rare occasion, development Institutions and while I commend the very few parapsychologist who attempt to look into this field from a scientific perspective and are vocal about that, when it comes to studying psychokinesis, I find that members of the PK community tend to focus a bit too much on trying to prove the existence of PK. If you asked me, I think what we should be focusing on is trying to ascertain a means by which we can foster the reliability of said Psychokinetic powers, and that is why data is important. Unless I'm mistaken, what we do know about this phenomena is practically useless. There are hundreds of claims stating that just about anybody can develop these powers, and yet when tested, most failed to show any significant results and of those that did, it's even more note-worthy when they were able to consistently demonstrate such prowess. Sure, as the link that I posted mentions, "not all experimental effects are replicable on demand. This is particularly true in experiments dealing with human capabilities. This doesn't mean those effects don't exist. Chris Carter draws an analogy with baseball. 'Even the best hitters in baseball cannot produce home runs on demand nor can we predict with certainty when home runs will occur... Yet over the long run, a good baseball player should hit the ball a fairly consistent proportion of times and we should expect fairly consistent differences between players (Carter, 61-62)'"

Perhaps there are certain internal factors that are commonly found amongst well-seasoned psychokinetics, perhaps variables in the environment might play a factor. Of course we would still have to test for fraud and try to minimize false positives, that of delusions. However, until we deem it important to note such details and document them down, we are grasping at straws. In my opinion, this lack of data collection and documentation, of which I find journals to be laughable in the sense that it's hardly compliable (unless someone's willing to develop a program to data mine these entries, which would be nice) reflects upon the stagnant state of the Psychokinetic community. Once we do start taking data collection seriously, this will be a major step towards finding a way to make these powers more reliable and thus practical.

There is also the issue of trying to figure out what data is relevant and what can be discarded, but as of the moment, that's hardly and issue if you ask me. Let us start documenting our experiences, place and time, state of mind, physical health, heritage background, religiosity and the like. The more information we have, the more likely we are to find a common connection, a theory of practice if you will. And for privacy reasons, some information need not be shared, after all, even if by some weird coincidence it has some sort of measurable effect we do not need to know your credit card number.

Let us start documenting with as much detail as we can our psychokinetic experiences and with these experiences documented, compiled and scavenged about till we find a common link. To make psychokinetic powers reliable and practical, we ought to consider the data.
